The Show 'En Portada' opens its season with the report 'Pandemic in the big city', which will be broadcast on Wednesday, September 16 at 11:30 p.m. on TVE's La 2.

The documentary, produced by the Spanish Public Television, addresses the unequal effect that covid-19 has had on the world's large cities based on the investigations of epidemiologists and international researchers in Mexico, the United States and Spain.

The objective of the piece is to reflect the realities in significant neighborhoods of three large cities: Leganés, in Madrid; the Bronx, in New York; and Iztapalapa, in Mexico City. In these three cases, a pattern has been demonstrated whereby the incidence of covid-19 is much higher in disadvantaged areas than in more affluent areas of these three large cities.

The documentary has had the constant support and collaboration of Manuel Franco, a researcher in Public Health and Epidemiology at the University of Alcalá; Usama Bilal and Mariana Lazo, researchers at Drexel University (Philadelphia, USA); Sakia Sassen, Professor of Sociology at Columbia University (New York, USA); Daniel Carrión, from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine; and Tonatiuh Barrientos, director of the Center for Research in Population Health of the Institute of Public Health of Mexico.

Urban areas are ground zero for the COVID-19 pandemic, with 90% of reported cases.

Cities are bearing the brunt of the crisis, many with overstretched health systems, inadequate water and sanitation services, and other problems.

This is particularly the case in the poorest areas, where the pandemic has exposed deep-seated inequalities.
