Rescuing Christmas (2023) -

I don&apos;t think I&apos;ve ever seen Sam Page in a bad Made For TV Christmas film. A tad too old seeming for his opposite sometimes, but never in a film with a story or production values so bad that I&apos;ve wanted to turn it off. As such I felt fairly safe as I settled in to watch this one.

Racheal Leigh Cook was not someone that I felt I&apos;d seen deliver poorly before either, but I do tend to remember the guys more than the girls.

They were both great in their roles of Sam and Erin and I like the fact that their story wasn&apos;t the traditional romance of every other formulaic Hallmark-esque seasonal film.

I have seen interpretations of this type of story done before but this was a particularly good version of the events. It was a kind of mash up of &apos;A Christmas Carol&apos; and &apos;It&apos;s A Wonderful Life&apos; (1946) with hints of the usual festive fair.

Erin had become slightly disillusioned by the holiday season due to a breakup the previous year and fell victim to a new scheme from the North Pole that allowed her 3 wishes. The Elves having had the idea that if they could save one person, others might start to feel the joy again too in order to boost the Christmas Spirit.

As you would imagine at least one of the wishes ended badly and resulted in Erin realising just how much Christmas meant to her when she attempted to save it for everyone else. Along the way she was helped by Sam, a blind date set up that she had met before it had all gone wrong.

Initially I did struggle to see the connection between them because they didn&apos;t spend a lot of time together and even when they did it was lacking a bit of romance and was more friendly. I did like their chemistry though. And because of the way their story developed I really liked how it ultimately ended, not really in the way that most of these films have.

Generally I do tend to like the films that include Santa (T. Mychael Rambo) and his Elves because it brings a different layer to the story which was certainly true of this one. It&apos;s never just the standard &quot;City Girl meets handsome small town Guy&quot; schtick when the fairy folk are involved, there&apos;s always more to it. Which isn&apos;t to say that I didn&apos;t want Sam and Erin to hit it off due to some other overwhelming magic adventure. They still kept enough romance to make it what I originally turned up for but also managed to take a long more circuitous route to get there.

The story also still managed to have a large amount of fun events and family traditions especially considering how it went for most of the second part.

I probably could have nitpicked about various things, but because I enjoyed it so much I didn&apos;t feel like writing them down. The only one I could remember was that when Santa was making a hot chocolate there was a huge queue that suddenly disappeared. Oh and where would they get the fairy lights from, which in itself will only make sense when you watch it, which you should, because it was definitely one of the better ones I&apos;ve seen this year and surely the most original story too.

My only other note was that it had a proper soundtrack too. That is to say actual charted songs sung by recognisable artists. In some respects that was a sign that they had spared no expense in the making of the film because so many others have terrible backing tracks or aspiring singers that cobble together something vaguely festive using Christmas buzz words. What they did here was apt for the story and added to it.

Personally I might have had Sam remember something of the final wish too and because I am a sucker for romance I might have laid their moments on more thickly, but it really did do the trick nicely anyway. One for the rewatch list for sure.
