The magazine fell for a gigantic scam that still raises questions 40 years later: Who was interested in this falsification of history? And what should it achieve? The Fake Hitler Diaries: Many Questions Are Still Unanswered Reporter Gerd Heidemann, who bought the alleged diaries of Adolf Hitler for "stern", is 91 years old today. He feels wrongly put in the pillory. For the film project "Der Hitler-Fake" he opened his archive in a Hamburg basement and also made previously unpublished documents accessible; also all recorded phone calls with the forger Konrad Kujau. But many questions are still unanswered. Why did Kujau write so explicitly about Hitler's private life, about dogs, upset stomachs, Eva Braun and homosexual Nazi officials? In "Der Hitler-Fake" Kujau's forgeries can be seen, which throw a different light on the diaries beyond the media scandal: The Holocaust was supposed to be put into perspective, Hitler and thus also the German people relieved of the responsibility for murdering millions of people.
