This was Udo Kier's final film role. Kier said he only accepts non-lead roles if they leave a strong impression on the audience, which is why he chose to take the part of Hans. He had previously worked with the director on the film Bacurau and returned to Brazil for a one-week stay in Recife to shoot his scenes in a single intense day.
