1. Piazza Fontana, the Story of a Conspiracy On September 12, 1969, bombs exploded in Milan and Rome. In Milan, at the Farmer's Bank on the Piazza Fontana, the toll was high : 13 dead, some one hundred wounded. This carnage followed a series of 150 acts of terrorism since the beginning of 1969, creating a sense of insecurity throughout the land. The investigation immediately focused on the anarchist milieu, and a group called "March 22" and its leader, Pietro Valpreda, were arrested and charged with the bombings. But a few months later, investigations revealed the involvement of a fascist group in the bombings. 2. The Strategy of Tension The chief right-wing party leaders were ready to call up the army to restore order to the country. They had the approval of NATO strategists, who were convinced that, since the invasion of Czechoslovakia in August 1968, Italy now stood in the front line against Soviet aggression.
