In 1918 the world's first pandemic of H1N1 flu killed beteeen 50 and 100 million people (about 5% of the world populace). Most countries suppressed reports of the pandemic, but the freer press of Spain reported the full scope of it. Thus, most folks first read about it as the 'Spanish Influenza'.
