The idea for the documentary Invisible Cities arose at the beginning of the studies for the landmark designation of Vila de Estrela, in Magé. It was filmed among the ruins of four extinct cities in the State of Rio de Janeiro: Santo Antônio de Sá, São João Marcos, Vila de Iguassú, and Vila de Estrela. Produced by the State Institute of Cultural Heritage - Inepac, the film retraces the remnants of what were once homes, churches, bridges, streets, and public buildings, listening to former residents and following the footsteps of chroniclers who passed through, and of those who once lived there, loved, worked, and helped build a culture as rich as ours. Through these fragments, we bring these cities back to life, highlighting the importance of landmark designation in Rio de Janeiro and the struggle to preserve their memory. Active between the 18th and 20th centuries, Santo Antônio de Sá, São João Marcos, Vila de Iguassú, and Vila de Estrela played key roles in the occupation of Rio de Janeiro's territory but vanished amid economic crises, epidemics, and the abandonment of ports after the arrival of the railroads, when they ceased to be vital trade routes between the countryside and the capital. São João Marcos, in turn, was delisted and demolished to make way for a reservoir, forcing its inhabitants to leave-a memory they still recall with longing for their homeland.
