Fifteen Minutes Warning

Here&apos;s a short film from the United States Air Force. Its primary subject is the DEW line run by the United States and its allies -- Canada, Denmark, Norway and Great Britain -- to give as much as fifteen minutes warning of something coming in over the North Pole.... and yes, the Soviets are mentioned. Once.

It was an enormous undertaking in money, manpower, and sheer difficulty, producing buildings that could on the ever-growing permafrost without melting it and sinking dozens of feet into the ice; producing equipment that could run in conditions in which the temperature might drop to minus 65 Fahrenheit -- that&apos;s 54 below zero in Celsius. And could keep running reliably.

In 1985 they began to replace the entire operation.
