The story centers around a mother and daughter from the Yi ethnic minority in Yunnan, China. The young single mother dropped out of school at 17 and unexpectedly gave birth to her daughter, Azimo. She has worked for many years in Guangdong as a hostess in a KTV bar. Upon learning that she is in the late stages of AIDS, she decides to take her daughter to see the sea as a coming-of-age gift, embarking on one final winter journey. For Azimo, who has been left behind in the countryside for many years, the coastal town is like "another world from a book." However, she soon discovers an unpleasant side to the dazzling, modern city and uncovers a hidden secret about her mother, straining their relationship.
