In recent decades, the popular housing movement has started to occupy vacant buildings in the central areas of large cities, both as a form of pressure on the public authorities and to meet the demand for housing. Empty buildings go against what is stipulated by the Statute of the Cities and could be rehabilitated and transformed into social housing. Residents tell the stories of the São Francisco, Mauá, and Marconi occupations, located in the center of São Paulo.
