A widespread conspiracy theory falsely claimed that celebrities including Avicii, Chester Bennington, Chris Cornell, and Anthony Bourdain were involved in this project and were killed for trying to expose child sexual abuse. This theory has been debunked. The documentary was originally created by Lisa Beane and LeRoi Moore (of Dave Matthews Band), and development was halted around 2015. A representative for the project told Reuters that none of the celebrities mentioned were ever involved in any capacity. The deaths of those individuals were all officially ruled suicides, and there is no credible evidence linking them to The Silent Children documentary. The deaths of Avicii (April 2018), Chester Bennington (July 2017), Chris Cornell (May 2017), and Anthony Bourdain (June 2018) were all officially ruled suicides. Autopsies and investigations found no evidence of foul play. Statements from their families have highlighted their struggles with mental health.
