Paul Vietz grew up in Nazi Germany. His mother died of complications after surgery and his father died during the war fighting on the Russian Front. As a teenager in Berlin in 1944 and 1945, he survived the allied bombing of his hometown and subsequent occupation by United States and Soviet forces. After the war, he developed an interest in medicine. He completed his doctorate of medicine, got married and immigrated to the United States. He established his obstetrics and gynecology surgical practice in Westminster, Maryland in 1964. He became interested in laparoscopic surgery after his patients requested if he could perform tubal ligation procedures. He joined the newly formed American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL), where he met pioneering laparoscopic surgeon Dr. Kurt Semm of Kiel, Germany. Their collaboration led to the development of the first completely laparoscopic hysterectomy, in 1991. Dr. Semm performed the first two procedures and Dr. Vietz performed the first procedure in the United States three months later.
