Daniel Percival directs Norman Reedus brilliantly, whenever Daryl is in a scene, the episode is good

&quot;El Sacrificio&quot; is the third episode of season three, directed by Daniel Percival and written by Jason Richman &amp; David Zabel who penned the two previous episodes. What I think this episode does best, in terms of writing and direction, is to move the story forward but there are numerous scenes which feel unnecessary, time that could instead have been spent elsewhere for better build up for the final twist. Daniel Percival is such a compelling director who has been with the TWD Universe since many years back, he knows how to direct scenes with character drama and dialogue heavy scenes, but failed in making a compelling zombie action sequence which wasn&apos;t staged nor written that well. There was no tension or real suspension. His mise-en-scene were great in this episode.

The episode&apos;s premise: Daryl focuses on getting home while Carol gets more invested in Solaz.

Again, the writing is a mixed bag, mostly because of poor characterization for Carol. She doesn&apos;t really fit into the story, something which Isabelle Carriere would have. But I&apos;m so grateful the writers are capable, very capable of writing Daryl Dixon. His characterization is on point, and Norman Reedus brings yet again an exceptional performance. From the more subtle acting, to the more dialogue heavy scenes, and finally the more emotional ones. You clearly see and understand him missing Isabelle as he watches this young couple. The writing for Federico &quot;Fede&quot; de Rivera is very good, in my opinion, who&apos;s played brilliantly by Óscar Jaenada who portrays the leader of Solaz del Mar with such presence. The writing of Guillermo Torres, the leader of El Alcázar who claims to be a descendant of the Spanish monarchy. He&apos;s a one dimensional character portrayed like all leader type characters we have seen before in Daryl Dixon and the other TWD shows. The writing for Daryl and Roberto are great. Meanwhile, whilst they&apos;re on an adventure to fix the boat, Carol is inside the settlement and we learn more of Antonio who serves as another important character which helps the iconic duo. I really like the writing for him and the performance Eduardo Noriega gives. Him and Óscar Jaenada are a reason why I find potential in this story set in Spain, characters and performances which makes for something original that we haven&apos;t really seen before. Something that I liked is how Justina de Rivera is the niece of Solaz del Mar&apos;s Leader. What this does to the story is making Federico &quot;Fede&quot; de Rivera more human, and not a one dimensional character like he could have been. But there&apos;s so many layers to him, and the little we have seen of him, I&apos;m surprised. I think Candela Saitta gave a fine performance as Justina.

To summarize, was this episode better or worse than the previous episode? I think the writing was on the same level throughout the entire episode, but the poor characterization of Carol drags it down. I also think there could have been much more happening, 40+ minutes and not much happened. We got to know these new characters, and some character development. With a twist at the end which felt forced. It was a good episode but with there only being seven episodes in the season, I don&apos;t really know what they&apos;re doing. I&apos;m not feeling the same hype this time around. All around, mostly a good episode, a bit too slow paced.
