Following the death of Stalin a power struggle began between the old guard of Stalinists lead by Molotov, Kaganovich and Malenkov and the new leaders under Kruschev. Stalins replacement would be chosen by the Central Committee. Unfavored in the Presidium packed with Stalinists, Kruschev insisted the new leader be chosen in the Plenem where the majority of the members where his appointees. In three days of debate Stalin's purges where an unbearable burden for the old guard as Kruschev's allies went on the attack. Kruschev was victorious and, like Stalin, purged his detractors, not with executions but political exile through demotions to minor positions in distant lands of the Soviet Union.
