This documentary covers one of Britain&apos;s lesser known serial killers, Trevor Joseph Hardy, who murdered three teenage girls between New Year&apos;s Eve 1974 and March 1976. It includes reconstructions and more importantly interviews with both Hardy&apos;s younger brother Colin and the journalist Alan Hart.

By the age of 15, Hardy was already a hardened criminal, and was given a 12 month sentence for a series of burglaries. According to Colin Hardy, there was nothing in his brother&apos;s upbringing to warrant this behaviour. Progressing from crimes of dishonesty to crimes of violence, he stabbed a man in the leg, and might have considered himself lucky to escape a murder charge when the blade narrowly missed an artery. Next he attacked a man with a pickaxe over a triviality. According to Colin Hardy, the victim never worked again, and died prematurely; Hardy earned himself a five year sentence for that assault. Six weeks after his release from prison, he took things to a whole new level with the murder of a 15 year old girl who was on her way to a New Year&apos;s Eve party.

This first murder went unnoticed after Hardy buried the victim in a makeshift shallow grave, but he appears to have made only a half-hearted attempt to conceal the second body, which was discovered the following day. The first police officer on the scene explains what confronted him. Hardy had gouged out her eyes and bitten off a nipple. She had not been raped.

Hardy confessed or rather boasted about this murder to Colin, who dismissed it as braggadocio until his brother beat him to a pulp the same night for no apparent reason. Colin reported the confession, and Hardy was arrested, but the police were unable to make a case, and according to Colin they told him they didn&apos;t believe him.

The next time the media focused on Hardy it was as a hero who rescued his neighbours from a fire. The double killer would have been more heroic if he hadn&apos;t started the fire himself. His final victim was 17 years old; her father speaks here, and a journalist who reported on the case relates how her naked, mutilated body was fished out of the Rochdale Canal. 

This terrible crime put Hardy well and truly in the frame, and he was arrested on suspicion of two murders; he confessed to three, leading the police to the grave of his first victim. In spite of his confession, Hardy pleaded not guilty; he was convicted in short order. Colin said he looked forward to the day he was informed by the authorities that his brother had died. He didn&apos;t have long to wait; Trevor Hardy died while this documentary was being made. Aged 67, he suffered a heart attack after three and a half decades behind bars.

If you ignore the psychobabble by the resident airhead, this is a very passable if gruesome documentary.
