The names of the three main characters are a reference to the three protagonists of Samurai Champloo. Mugen translates as 'Infinity', Bret's last name. 'Jinrei' is a reference to Jin, and the two characters also wear red and blue in both this short film and the series. In Samurai Champloo, 'Fuu' repeatedly tries to stop the main two from fighting, but Christian 'Foo' is the one facilitating the duel. His first name is a reference to 'Sylvia Christel', who serves a similar purpose in the game series, 'No More Heroes'. And finally, as a hit man trying to be the best, Brets first name is a tribute to legendary wrestler, Bret ''The Hit Man'' Hart. And so is the suplex he performs.
