The programmed end of humanity No one hoped for a change capable of halting the destructive process at work, and in any case, there were few people left to work on it. On the contrary, the survivors seemed to be doing everything necessary to hasten the fatal deadline. The many ills caused by humanity over the past few centuries have caused the number of living beings, all species combined, to continue to decline despite technological progress. Calamities have followed one another relentlessly, and their effects have accumulated unpredictably in a vicious spiral devouring an exponential number of victims. Conventional wars and multiple inventive forms of terrorism have been compounded by ever more unprecedented, deadly, and incurable diseases. The devastating effects of climate change due to pollution and deforestation have also been compounded. Entire regions have plunged into overheating or glaciation depending on the period, floods have followed tornadoes, heatwaves, and snowstorms. So much so that desertification has progressed visibly on every continent, survival and agricultural conditions have become increasingly problematic, and famine is now endemic, even in formerly wealthy countries. Population decline and biotechnological marvels have not offset the precipitous drop in agricultural production due to the inevitable disappearance of soils. Science, summoned as always to try to resolve the aberrations committed by everyone, has been able to do little to slow the mechanisms of destruction.
