He then showed how the Jews were driven out, at first by Nebuchadnezzar and then by the Romans - to such an extent that they became virtually extinct. Meanwhile the Christian religion was established, laying its own claim to the city.

Yet there remained a feeling that the city is somehow ineffable; its true significance lies beyond mortal combat and the efforts of individuals to preserve it for their particular religion.
