'Live, Breathe, Hula' offers a glimpse into the artistry of Mark Kealii Hoomalu, a larger-than-life hula instructor who moved from Hawaii to the San Francisco Bay Area over 30 years ago. Over time, Hoomalu has not only become recognized for his unique chanting voice and his precise, aggressive style of hula, but also for his nonconformist tendencies to push boundaries and challenge concepts of traditional Hawaiian dance despite criticism from the hula community. We follow Hoomalu from Oakland, Calif., home to Oahu, where he teaches over 400 local dancers two of his compositions for a Sheraton Hawaii Bowl halftime show. In this we see an artist's obsession with his craft, while exploring the challenges of representing a culture thousands of miles from its homeland.
