Quite uplifting poem which is well delivered by the actor and mostly by the film

A Teacher, Eh?

I&apos;m not sure if this short film was produced with a motivational motivation behind it, but even if it will not be part of teacher recruitment or retention material, it certainly could be. The plot sees a man at a posh group dinner, who is asked what he does and then confronted by the withering sentence of the title, by the more successful who seem to pity how little he has achieved in his life. The man concedes that he is tired, and begins to talk about the things that he is tired of in his job.

The writing here is clever because we get the teacher conceding he is tired, which seems genuine and realistic, and many of the things he is tired of could be taken as negatives of the job, and indeed at the start of the piece this is how we take them. However as the piece continues it is clear that it is not that he is tired &quot;of&quot; all these things, so much as tired &quot;from&quot; them, because he values them and puts in effort to do his best for those in his care. The structure of the argument and the pacing of the prose both work very well together, producing a monologue from the main character which is engaging and accessible – even to those of us not teachers.

The main actor delivers it very well, he doesn&apos;t overdo anything and he keeps the dialogue clear and to a good tempo. The production itself keeps him moving, from the dinner to the classroom to the street and to the dinner again; mostly it complements the words well without distracting from them. The only misstep was that I thought the excessive portrayal of the older couple at the end was unnecessarily heavy-handed; I guess it works as a punch-line, but I thought the point had been made well enough, and the slightly gross images tended to sit awkwardly on top of the much more positive ones that had been put forward until that point.

Aside from this minor quibble, the poem flows very well, and the film adds to it by its delivery. Well worth watching for 3 minutes, it is an effective ode to the good (and tiring) side of teaching.
