Bone Hill is the kind of indie folk-horror that reminds you why backing small films is often worth the gamble. Indie Rights strikes again with a production that may not have the budget for sweeping crane shots or CGI demons, but it does have heart - and occasionally teeth.

The film spins a promising tale rooted in Native American myth: ancient entities, one good, one very much not, are sealed within a human host to stop them tearing up the landscape like supernatural road-rage drivers. Naturally, things go south when the local sheriff and his deputies blunder into a sacred ritual and break the cosmic padlock. As premises go, it&apos;s rock solid, and you can almost see the better, sharper version shimmering just out of reach.

Where the story slips is in its character focus. The Native American figures should be the emotional core, yet they&apos;re treated more like mythological bookends before the spotlight swings back to the white leads. Even those leads could use a touch more depth; they&apos;re believable enough but hardly the kind of characters you&apos;d follow into the woods at night.

Direction-wise, the filmmaker has a good eye for colour and shadow, there&apos;s plenty of mood, not quite enough dread. The pacing stays in one gear throughout, when a horror like this begs for slow-burn tension and sudden spikes. The low-budget effects are handled with clever cutting, but yes, you&apos;ll still spot the seams if you squint.

The cast range from decent to very good, with one notable exception: the actress playing the original host feels miscast enough to drag scenes down. Thankfully, the actress portraying Joan more than makes up for it; she brings warmth, humour, and presence every time she&apos;s on screen.

Despite the bumps, Bone Hill is an earnest, engaging indie horror. If you enjoy folklore, micro-budgets used with ambition, and stories told with more heart than funds, it&apos;s worth your time. If you prefer your horror polished and prestige-ready, save this one for when you&apos;ve emptied the watchlist.
