Italian erotica is a breath of fresh air

&quot;Donna Matilde&quot; is the first new Adult feature in years that fits my criteria for successful story-line porn filmmaking: its engrossing but unpretentious tale features interesting, well-acted characters, clever twists of plot, lovely location shooting and a proper balance between explicit sex scenes, softcore tease and purely expository segments. Director Marcus Dolby, whose work a decade ago was mediocre (&quot;La locandiera&quot;, &quot;Pop Hard&quot;), hits the bullseye this time.

He wisely keeps the story simple: Lorenzo Bertolucci (surname chosen for obvious reference to the mainstream Italian erotica pioneer) has died, and left his charming country house in Rimini to his niece Alessandra (striking beauty Alexandra Stein). Lorenzo&apos;s mistress Donna Matilde (earth Mother actress Marina Montero, who I hadn&apos;t seen since her smashing one-shot stardom as &quot;Lili&quot; for director Luca Damiano back in 1998) and her family have lived in the house for two generations, and will be evicted by Stein, setting up a battle over custody of the property that is fought in the bedroom rather than a court of law.

I watched the video in the first place to see Cathy Heaven, my favorite current Euro Adult star, and she does not disappoint. She&apos;s cast as Alessandra&apos;s wily secretary Patrizia, who underhandedly furthers her boss&apos;s interests, first by humping the notary&apos;s assistant Christian Clay to obtain crucial information concerning the will and details of the property&apos;s title transfer that notary Nobili (another lover of Matilde&apos;s) withheld to further his girl friend&apos;s interests.

When Patrizia and Alessandra arrive at the lovely estate, the warring camps are cool to each other, but after an eviction notice (ordering Matilde &amp; brood to decamp in just three days time) is served by Patrizia, sexual wiles begin to wear down each other&apos;s defenses.

The plot twists at this point, and believable performances by a cast including stalwart porn star Ian Scott as Matilde&apos;s husband, keep the action suspenseful and unpredictable. Numerous sex scenes, including a couple of tantalizing, strictly soft-core episodes (which 99% of mainstream pornographers have abandoned in recent decades), are arousing and satisfying for the target audience. But the porn connoisseur addicted to the Golden Age classics of the &apos;70s and &apos;80s will find a delightful modern extension of tradition, good enough to have qualified as a theatrical release back when porno theaters were in blossom.

Perhaps the most unusual aspect of &quot;Donna Matilde&quot; is that while Montero&apos;s performance is full-bodied and dominating, she is accorded the fewest sex scenes of the prinicipal players. This &quot;keeping the viewer wanting more&quot; from her is classic pornographic technique, and in my case does just that - I&apos;ll be wanting to see Marina again for the third time in 18 years, and probably settle for the inevitable gonzo showcase as I doubt whether my enthusiasm for her &quot;Donna Matilde&quot; acting and Dolby&apos;s accomplishment will carry any weight toward enabling future productions of this quality in a marketplace drowning in wall-to-wall-sex junk.

Note: Dolby already has a new release featuring much of the same cast titled &quot;Glamour Women 2&quot; which is strictly gonzo in content.
