To get Billy away from the tension in the house, Carolee proposes sending him away to camp for the remainder of the summer, but Emma worries that it will backfire with Dan. Dan arrives and overhears his name mentioned in Carolee and Emma's conversation. Carolee runs her idea past Dan, who accuses her of attempting to separate him from his son. During the argument, Dan questions whether or not Carolee is really carrying Steve's child, since it could be a trick that Steve contrived and talked Carolee into perpetrating. Stunned, Carolee softly suggests that Dan is ill, not physically, but mentally. Dan coldly slaps Carolee's face, knocking her to the floor, and he stalks out. Later, Toni arrives at Dan's office and tells him that she spoke with Billy and Carolee. She implores him not to be angry at Carolee for bringing her to Hope Memorial or befriending her. Furthermore, she presses him to admit that his hostility toward her is real, even though she doesn't understand why he feels that way. The conversation makes Dan angry, and he eventually blurts out that Toni's mother was a tramp who abandoned Billy, her son, so that she could run away with her lover. Upset, Toni dashes from his office. Maggie turns up late to work in the clinic because of another dizzy spell. Althea learns from Maggie that Matt canceled Nick's project. Maggie is forced to admit that Matt thinks Nick pushed the project because he was in competition with John for Althea's love. Althea laments that she's the cause of yet another disappointment in Nick's life. Emma finds Carolee with an ice pack on her eye. Carolee lies that she became dizzy, fell, and hit her head on the mantel. Emma wisely asks how Carolee ever thought she could hide what really happened then says sternly that this can't go on any longer.
