A general captures a medieval city and receives a petition for clemency from the natives. He lodges in the house of the principal citizen and becomes enamored of his daughter. So does his adjutant who falls deeply in love, and she with him, and when the general tries to force a kiss from her lips the adjutant interferes and is straightway laid hold of, imprisoned, tried and condemned to death. The girl has a vision of his being hanged and to save him she gives her promise to wed the general and thus receives the pardon. She hastens to the dungeon with it and as her lover is released she takes poison and dies in his arms rather than give herself to the man in whose power both are.
