💡 Did You Know?
The 1997 edition marked the first time the name Luxembourg Grand Prix was used in a Formula 1 World Championship race.
The race was held at the Nürburgring in Germany, about 50 miles (80 km) from the Luxembourg border. The name was chosen because the Hockenheimring already hosted the German Grand Prix that year, and Formula 1 rules at the time restricted one Grand Prix per country per year under the same name.
The Nürburgring had previously hosted the European Grand Prix in 1984, 1995 and 1996, but it was renamed due to other changes in the 1997 schedule. Following the cancellation of the Portuguese Grand Prix, a second race in Spain was added, with Jerez hosting the European Grand Prix along with the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona.
