Alexis Michalik was inspired by Shakespeare in Love (1998) and sought to write a similar film about the creation of a French play, choosing "Cyrano de Bergerac" as he felt it was the biggest "hit" of French theatre and left its mark on its author Edmond Rostand. Michalik couldn't find anyone interested to finance the film however and set it aside, until he saw a stage production of "Shakespeare in Love" and decided to turn his script into a play. The play was massive success, leading film studios to be interested in adapting it for film.
