A Daruma doll is a hollow, round, Japanese traditional doll modeled after Bodhidharma, the founder of the Zen tradition of Buddhism. It is accompanied by certain rules as part of the simple but powerful tradition: when you get a Daruma, you make a wish or set a goal, then color in one of its blank eyes (usually the left one). The Daruma then "stares" at you until you've made that wish come true. Then, you fill in the second eye to mark your success and as a symbol of gratitude for otherworldly intervention.
