While shooting, Joe Wein was in an actual Avon raft built in 1980 and no longer considered safe as an emergency raft. All equipment used in the raft was confirmed by Steven Callahan as the same equipment he used at the time of his ordeal. Wein was in the raft and actually adrift in the Atlantic Ocean, sometimes in water over 3,000 feet deep strapped to heavy camera equipment.
