'Blacky' is about color obsession and how racism does function in India. We see in movies and mythological TV programmes, villains are projected in black /dark skin color indicating dark-skinned people to be bad, uncultured people. In India, you can identify caste, region of the individual on the basis of color and the perception is that lower caste people are dark, and discrimination happens on this basis where opportunities are denied. We like black clothes, black accessories but don't like dark humans. Even if anyone tries to love dark skinned girl/ boy, society doesn't accept contrast couple, and they face judgment on the basis of prejudices. The movie also pours some light on the patriarchal influences and perceptions of the skin-tone where girls have no choice of their own. Dark skinned girls face problems during marriages and are asked for more dowry compared to fair-skinned, thus color also decides " rate of dowry " in India. Also, there are some songs taught in Schools, directly /indirectly teaching children to discriminate on basis of color . ( " Gori Gori Paan Fulasarkhi Chaan dada mala ek vahini aan " song taught in Maharashtra region of India, Recounts the Idea of the sister who tells the brother to marry the fair skinned girl who is as soft as a flower ) Then my question is, where should dark skinned girls go? Racism is taught in society and it is the need of the day to identify and eradicate this serious problem which can only be possible through continuous awareness. Till then " Black is Beautiful!
