Uninvolving and morbid intro

This miniseries version of Stephen King&apos;s &quot;The Stand&quot; was broadcast at the end of Trump&apos;s term, when he was botching up the battle against Covid-19, so its opening segment depicting the epidemic that killed 7 billion people has to be viewed against that real-world backdrop.

I immediately recalled one of my favorite sci-fi films, Robert Wise&apos;s suspenseful movie of Michael Crichton&apos;s &quot;The Andromeda Strain&quot;, from 50 years earlier. Its setup scenes were exciting and chilling, while here we have boring, mechanical footage with an underwhelming cast. The &quot;relatable&quot; teen played by Teague in Maine is a drag, as if he&apos;s watched too many Jim Carrey movies, and Marsden as the handsome immune hero in Texas is one-dimensional. As someone who is not a King fan interested in making mental notes on how faithful this adaptation is to his work, this opening to the story is unexceptional and hardly a grabber.

The pace picks up with annoying jumps ahead in the story/time frame, and Whoopi Goldberg is merely teased with a sudden appearance. As far as &quot;End of Civilization&quot; movies, this one begins with pure boredom.
