Impressive but not fully satisfying

With high expectations I watched Bi Gan&apos;s third feature film. His first two movies created these high expectations, where Resurrection received early on quite some hype on its own as well.

Bi Gan&apos;s previous film &quot;Long Day&apos;s Journey Into the Night&quot; absolutely stands out in many ways and I have rewatched that movie multiple times. I don&apos;t believe I will rewatch Resurrection as eagerly as it didn&apos;t have a similarly profound impact, despite I wish I liked it just as much.

The visuals are stunning, the framing and directing top notch, the technical artistry simply spectacular... The plot though, was very hard to figure out. Now, I specifically like movies with minimal plot or even no plot at all. In Resurrection however, I believe there was an actual attempt to present a plot of some kind and add some messaging around it. I just couldn&apos;t understand and follow, despite feeling well trained in watching more demanding movies. Because of this, the movie felt a bit disjointed and more of a tour-de-force by Bi Gan rather than a coherent film that engages spectators consistently. I also found it quite dark with some nasty violent scenes that didn&apos;t really work for me. There was a lot &quot;effect&quot; without deeper layers to experience, or these just didn&apos;t surface at the first showing.

Bi Gan shows his talents; perhaps he tried just a bit too hard and started showing off? I felt not as connected with the storyline(s) nor with any of the characters, but mainly with the technical brilliance, which in the end is less satisfying after a viewing. There were some clear references to other notable movie makers (some Tarkovskian elements for sure), and some typical Bi Gan elements too (dark characters singing karaoke) forming altogether a unique and beautiful movie still.

I would definitely recommend to watch this movie as it&apos;s absolutely impressive, it&apos;s a true experience but not one that goes as deep or lasts as long as his previous film, which I consider a real masterpiece. I am excited about what else Bi Gan is going to bring us as he is still early on in his career and I hope he will continue to impress us with his unique style en talent.
