Director Greg Kohs tried to get the rights to Neil Diamond's music for the film. Two days before its scheduled premiere at Slamdance Film Festival, Kohs and got a cease-and-desist letter from Diamond's music publisher. Kohs postponed the screening and contacted Eddie Vedder, who had invited Lightning & Thunder to perform at Pearl Jam's show at Milwaukee's Summerfest in 1998, and asked if Vedder could sent the film to Diamond directly. In case he couldn't get a permission on time for the new premiere date, Kohs quickly made a cut of film without Diamond's music. On the evening of the screening, Diamond personally called Kohs to say that he loved the film, and that he would be honored to have his music in it.
